9.5 Tristimulus values

A general requirement on the mathematics of colour measurement is to design a three-dimensional system in which every colour is characterised through its unique coordinates.

To formulate a mathematical approach describing colour, we have to combine three basic informations:

The reflectance curve of the sample has to be measured as a characteristic property describing the spectral absorption of light. This is done by photometric methods and in an ideal case, should be independent of the measurement technique (in practice this is not the case).

The sensitivity of receptors in the human eye for certain wavelength has to be included in such a model. This is done by means of the tristimulus curves , , for a chosen viewing angle (2°, 10°).

The light source has to be included by introduction of the spectral energy distribution of a standardised light source (e.g. C, A, D65, F-11).
